WHAT Managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Do Not Call Registry gives consumers a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. KEY POINTS
- Telemarketers are prohibited from calling consumers who have put their phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry
- Caller ID information must be transmitted
- There is an "established business relationship" exception to the National Do Not Call provisions. A company may call a consumer with whom it has such a relationship, even if the consumer's number is on the Registry.
- The National Do Not Call Registry provisions do not apply to for-profit telefunders; rather, for-profit telefunders must keep their own Do Not Call lists, and honor donors' requests not to be called.
ACTION YOU NEED TO TAKE If you are a telemarketer marketing to consumers, go to https://telemarketing.donotcall.gov to subscribe your business to the "National Do Not Call Registry." You will be assigned a "SANS" number that you should keep for future reference. MORE INFORMATION Visit the "Do Not Call Registry" Web site. |
